Fish oil capsules 101 – Pros and cons

| On 15, May 2013

Fish oil capsules are everywhere. As far as I know, it is now available in some generic stores where people can buy it for as low as P8.00 a capsule. This is also highly recommended by doctors and health gurus.

Well, no doubt, omega-3 fatty acids that is highly present in fish oil improves health and will be very beneficial to humans.

Dr. William Conor, via the Mercola.com enlisted some benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids to human health. He said: “They are significant structural components of the cell membranes of tissues throughout the body and are especially rich in the retina, brain, and sperm, in which docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) constitutes 36.4% of total fatty acids.”

I texted a cardiovascular expert friend and he said that omega-3 fatty acids are best for people with coronary heart disease, clogged heart, mild hypertension and many more. He added that the oil is very good in preventing cancer.

As the saying goes: “Everything has their downfall” and so as fish oil. Consumers should also be aware that fish oil that comes in capsule can also do harm.

The Making Process

Extracting the oil from different fish involves heat. Experts will agree with me if I’ll say, heat can breakdown the natural substances that humans need. Same as the fish oil, Omega-3 fatty acids are delicate and should never go into heat of any kind. Heat also produces free radicals that little by little, harm the body.

The Conflicts

A news released by the Pub Med revealed that imbalance intake of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is present in fish oil can actually increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke. To prevent this, one must balance the essential fatty acids in take.

To pregnant women, there are studies saying that industrialized fish oil can add to the abnormal bleeding.

It is recommended to take fish oil 3 times a day to take care of your cardiovascular system and improve fitness. But, there are some claims that fish oil made them fatter. How come? Let me explain, a capsule, which contains almost a pinch of oil contains 10 to 20 calories. If you’ll follow the recommendation, you’ll end up with 30 to 60 calories more a day. To burn that, you’ll have to stay 30 more minutes in the thread mill.

What’s My Point?

I’m not saying that taking fish oil is bad for your health. It can also do something good. But, we shouldn’t just rely to the flowery advertisement that captivates our hearts to buy the product. We should always remember that nothing beats the natural things.

In order to balance the Omega-3 fatty acids in the body, one must include the traditional omega-6 in his system by eating the natural products like eggs, small amount of animal fat, animal liver and many more.

The bottom line is, the healthy way to live life is to balance everything. Including the “healthy capsules” we take.

If you want fish oil, I recommended that you buy those extracted by fermenting.
