Cherries: They Aren’t Just A Bomb, But A Superfood As Well
Filipinos, especially the children, love digging through the big bowl of fruit salad, checking for the most fantastic treasure — the slices of cherries. When we were kids, I and my siblings will compete with each other – fencing inside the bowl using our spoons – to get the few pieces.
Cherries are divine. The sweet with sour kicks are irresistible while the crunchy and consistent texture contributes to the fun food experience. Not just that, they are also packed with amazing benefits.
Your Sleep Best Friend
Cherries are one of the few fruits that contain the hormones called melatonin. Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland in the brain, which facilitates a peaceful and continuous sleep.
When you can’t sleep, you can chew on a few cherries. You won’t just enjoy the moment, they’ll also help you bid everyone “goodnight.”
Aid in Weight Loss
If you want to lose weight, you can always have cherries in your diet because when you eat them, you’ll immediately feel full. Plus, they are also low in calories — a cup full of them only has 100 calories and it’s enough to keep you from getting hungry for a few hours.
It is also rich in fiber and some vitamins that will keep your metabolism up.
Will Make you Look Younger
Cherries are known as antioxidants because aside from the fiber, which flushes out toxins and unwanted substances in the body, they are also rich in vitamin A. We all know that this vitamin can make your skin look younger and smoother.
Reduce Inflammation
Studies show that cherries are a good aid for body pains caused by inflammation.
A 2012 study gathered women aged 40-70 who are suffering from osteoarthritis. They were given with 10.5 oz of tart cherry juice twice a day for 21 days. After, they assessed through an interview and several blood tests.
Most of the participants claimed to find relief and the blood tests show likewise.
Post Workout Snack
A friend, who is a nutritionist working for a big fitness company, said that they use to advise their clients to munch on cherries at least an hour before working out. She said they are one of the best fruits to eat before and after burning those dreaded calories.
True enough, cherries are high in potassium and other vitamins that can give you energy. They can also help in building blood cells that ease the circulation and energy levels.
In 2006, researchers grouped 10 well-trained athletes and gave them either 30 ml of tart juice or a placebo twice a day for 7 days. It turned out that cherry juice consumption can reduce strength loss and prevent oxidative damage to the muscles.
Disease Prevention
Cherries are rich in potassium and this is known to remove the excess salt content in the body, thus, maintaining the body’s blood pressure. As a result, hypertension is prevented.
Cherries are also rich in an antioxidant called anthocyanins, which helps in reducing bad cholesterol levels. So, these red delicious fruits can reduce the risk of heart diseases and stroke.
They are also alkaline by nature. So, whenever you feel like you are having an acidity, you can eat several pieces to balance the Ph levels in your stomach.
Cherries are Amazing
Everybody enjoys cherries because of their appetizing color, indulging smell, enticing flavor, and a wonderful crunch. They are a flexible food because they are best when raw but can also be added to your favorite desserts.
Though a bit pricey, cherries are indeed the bombs.
